On our recent trip to the Netherlands we observed a somewhat unusual sunset from the train window enroute to Amsterdam. I realized then we were not far from Schiphol Airport, one of the busiest in Western Europe with hundreds of planes taking off and landing continually. The numerous vapour streaks in all directions were the vapour traiIs of airplanes showing against the backdrop of the setting sun. I  took a series of pictures which did not all turn out too well since I have only a small Fuji camera not made for shooting at high speeds. Some turned out well enough to serve as reference for this small painting and I am pleased with the result. It definitely calls for a larger canvas though.
